Adhesive Wear

Adhesive wear occurs when two nominally flat solid bodies are in sliding contact, whether or not they are lubricated. Adhesion occurs at the asperity [harshness] contacts at the interface. These contacts are sheared by relative motion, which may result in detachment of a fragment from one surface and attachment to the other.
